Mini Blog:
unfiltered sensor of my first thoughts of Autonomous Blogging
implies architecture of participation and remixing for ambient world, technological animal/plant/geology/physics divide
and on the receiving side, direct connection to digital shadow of physical world, unmediated by expert groups, scientists, governments
it\'s also a reflection of the cheapness and coming ubiquity of sensors and networked sensors. weather underground. this is often shaped in political terms, especially thru the lens of media arts like natalie jereminko\'s robotic pollution detecting dogs, and the pigeon blog project for ISEA 2006
some differentiations are required. the degree of openness, and degree of mediation. earthquakes rss feeds are actually manual -- seismograph sensor information is gathered, and to a large part analysed automonously, but the ultimate application of label of earthquake to the sum of these natural events is performed by a human, for good reason. earthquake designation has big impact on response and sets in motion subsequent indirect human reactions. data feeds of animal migrations are often obscured, or available only on permission, with licensing restrictions, for animal protection.
is satellite imagery sensor blogging? webcams? the data is only visually structured, but there is remarkable autonomy of these instruments publishing. what about traffic and parking place data feeds. gps traces in openstreetmap.
the most autonomous sensor: onboard webserver and wifi connection, RSS generated directly from sensor input.
sensor blogging also reflects back on the wider rss aggregation world. sensor feeds are mostly too voluminous to follow closely. some measure of filtering, graphing and visualization, analysis is implied to make sense of this (ie quake feeds make more sense mapped then in bloglines). sensor blogging techniques are at the advant garde -- the amount of content streamed through rss aggregators is already overwhelming, much beyond the actual information included (reblog behavior can usually be encoded numerically, or by hue). we start to look at blogging as sensors on collective mind. posted by: mikelTracking the Selfless Blogging Revolution?
A revolution? With each new micro-shift in computation enabled, network connected technology the jargon changes drastically, but the truly hard challenges people come up with haven’t changed since Turing first addressed them. The key problem of computation is not technological but what it in principle can interpret, this is what the Turing Test is about. Blogjects (blogging objects, i.e. robots, etc) are the newest buzz, the web 2.0 angle on Artificial Intelligence, a vehicle to speculate about reason embodied in software, about the possibility of machines making sense of the environment in a language accessible to humans.
A blogject is the bot updated. One should go easy on the bot, but less so on the journalists and gurus hyping them and who should know better, as bots were the workbench on which our current understanding of how little is understood was forged.
Blogging implies a mind taking in experiences, munching mentally on what happens until a certain threshold is reached and a blogpost HAS to be composed. A true blogject is pro-active not responsive like a bot is. Elsewhere we are working on little minds [we are imaging clouds of tiny script-particles possessing unintentional intelligence and get drunk on that thought alone], a blogject is a big mind far above the level of the slog (a Sensor Log) that feeds it. We daydream about blogjects travelling light-years to distant stars long before humans do, blogging about their boredom and loneliness, experiencing disasters for us, art and science. Few people are aware that at least one bot went to the moon as the natural language interface to on-board sensors of a moonrover.
Mind does not imply a Self. Automatic writing, streams of consciousness, hallucinations, dreams: mind producing some sort of information on its own, language in which its is hard to not find some cryptic meaning. A blogject as oracle? Each blogject communicating in an OnlyOneNativeSpeaker language?
This wouldn’t be a socialfiction.org project if its focus wasn’t muddled with other objectives equally of interest.
In the coming “internet of things“, another example of the linguistic ingenuity of the tech community, each physical object can emit a signal on its being in time and place, the pillars of reality, and of who owns it, the pillar of capitalism. But already without RFID in full swing there is no shortage of online available data (including webcams, satellite imagery), most of it however not available in a machine readable format (XML).
The point this project is making is that all data collected in/about public space should be made freely available in machine-readable open formats. Much of this data will be produced by us anyway, without our consent, and therefore it should belong in the public domain.
There are ethical complications: real-time data of rare animal species should be kept away from poachers.
There are practical complications: real-time high-quality sensor data consumes much memory and bandwidth for data that might not change much.
There are privacy complications: burglars checking your street feed to see when you are gone.
Open data is a simple demand, but the subject is far from easy. For now however we stick to naive optimism: open-up that data.
